What began as a cradle of Revolutionary War sentiment has been reborn centuries later as a cradle of European hospitality.
The story of the Chateau Hathorn began in 1832, when Gen. John Hathorn built his stone mansion after independence was won. Hathorn, a Revolutionary War hero and the commander of the Battle of Minisink, used palatial home as a hub of activity for the newly formed Republic.
Hathorn soon became a member of the New York State
Assembly and later its speaker, following this he was elected as a state senator and lastly, a member of The United States Congress.
This fine beginning would soon turn sour. For decades the stately mansion stood abandoned, until the Zueger family took a trip to Warwick, N.Y., to go apple picking. Standing on a hill in an orchard across from the property, Dolph and Helene Zueger spotted the
neglected building and decided to take a closer look. Peering inside, Dolph envisioned a grand restaurant, reminiscent of the great châteaux’s of Europe. Quickly the young couple made their decision.
The couple contacted the owner and enthusiastically purchased the property.
A year of renovations began. Helene restored the interior fabrics and Woodwork to their original beauty. Fireplaces, ceilings and staircases of oak, rosewood and mahogany were burnished to a luster. Anything, which could not be salvaged, was recreated in minute detail, from the dining room chairs to the draperies that grace the grand ballroom.
Today, under the care of the Zueger family, Gen. Hathorn's stately home has become a special destination place for overnight accommodations, fine dining, weddings, and special events.
