July 4th is one of the most special times to be in Orange County. There is something for everyone – whether you like American history, fireworks over the Hudson, or hot dogs & sno cones. For some great small-town parades, Cornwall and Circleville both fit the bill. For those who like history, spend an afternoon at Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, where Mickey “The Lip” Tangel will be there to talk about baseball through music, poetry, and storytelling. Stay there until dusk, where you will have a great view of the fireworks over the Newburgh waterfront from the lawn. Another great way to see the fireworks is on a Hudson River cruise – the River Rose leaves from Newburgh landing in the evening and promises a night of great views and good fun. Bear Mountain State Park also has an impressive fireworks display, set against the scenic backdrop of the Hudson Valley. For an all-day event, check out Port Jervis’ 4th of July Extravaganza! There will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence, patriotic songs, and a fireworks display, along with plenty of food and ice cream vendors! Or take part in the Great American Weekend in Goshen, where there are crafts, entertainment, rides, and great food. Come support our brave firemen at the Firemen’s parade in Greenwood Lake, which will be followed by fireworks at dusk. For an unforgettable American experience, spend your 4th of July with America’s finest at the historic West Point Military Academy. The West Point Band’s Jazz Knights will be there to give a free concert, which will as always conclude with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, live canons, and fireworks. No matter what your 4th of July plans are, Orange County is one of the most exciting and nostalgic places to be on this national holiday.
